Frequently asked questions
What's a Tabata?
The Tabata is a high-intensity protocol designed by Dr. Izumi Tabata in the 90s: 20 seconds all-out, 10 seconds rest, repeated 8 times. Four minutes total. Works for almost any exercise you can repeat at full effort — burpees, squats, sprints, jumping jacks.
Do I have to install anything or sign up?
No. The page runs 100% in your browser. No signup, no account, nothing sent to any server. Refresh the page and the settings go back to defaults — save favourite presets as bookmarks if you want them back fast.
Does the timer keep ticking when I switch tabs?
Yes. We use a monotonic clock that keeps advancing even when the browser suspends the tab — when you come back, the counter is on the correct second. On mobile, we request a wake-lock to keep the screen on during the session.
Does it work on phone and tablet?
Yes — it's fully responsive from large desktop to phone. That said, if you train seriously, install the watch app: it's purpose-built for this, and battery life is far better.
What keyboard shortcuts are there?
Space for play / pause. R for reset. Esc to exit fullscreen mode.
What's the difference between Tabata, HIIT and EMOM?
Tabata is a specific case of HIIT with a 2:1 ratio (20s on / 10s off). HIIT is the umbrella term for any high-intensity interval workout (45/15, 30/30, etc.). EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute) is continuous work in one-minute blocks: you do your reps and rest the rest of the minute. This page handles all three.
